Question: In a recent poll, 71% of Americans admit to skipping, rescheduling, or turning down plans this time of year to do this. What is it?
Answer: Watch football!
Wow! That’s a lot of people canceling plans for a sport. What is it about football that gets people so jazzed up and has them canceling plans to watch it? Maybe it’s the crazy things that can happen during a game (like last week’s Broncos game). Maybe it’s the hope that our team can rise to the challenge and experience the thrill of victory, rather than the agony of defeat. Perhaps football mirrors life a little bit that way.
Scripture tells us that we are in a battle. The Devil and the kingdom of darkness are at work seeking to tear down God’s kingdom and bring more and more ruin to His people and creation. We feel the pressure and pain of this battle all the time. But God gives us hope that His kingdom already has, and ultimately will overcome the kingdom of darkness, and we can call out to Him when we have need to receive His help and experience His peace, power, and presence.
That’s the subject of our message today. Pastor Jill kicks off a new series on prayer this morning, in a sermon called “When the People of God Pray.”
