God-things of Christmas: The Shepherds

December 4, 2016 Speaker: Steve Garcia Series: Advent

Topic: The Christmas Story Passage: Luke 2:1–2:20

Would you like to see God? Are you up for a Godsighting?

Jesus said that the pure of heart would see God. But you may not feel your heart is pure enough to see Him or that you are worthy of a divine visit. Maybe you don’t believe God appears to people today or that He would bother Himself with the likes of us.

In Luke 2:8-20, we see how God sent his angels to appear to unexpected people in unexpected places. They didn’t announce Jesus’ birth to the religious leaders in the temple, but to rough and rowdy shepherds. The God-things of Christmas happened to Magi in Babylon, to shepherds in fields, and to a teenage girl who gave birth among animals. They happened outside the camp.

Today, I hope you’ve come to church expecting a God-thing. But don’t miss out on divine appointments that may happen at work, on the bus, or at your own kitchen table. Christmas is a season of surprises.
